Bo Hines, who served as the Trump administration's chief crypto point person, is stepping down from his role. Hines, the executive director of the White House Crypto Council, announced his departure on Sunday to return to the private sector, describing his tenure as "the honour of a lifetime." He will continue to assist with AI initiatives as a special government employee alongside David Sacks.
According to Eleanor Terrett, host of Crypto in America, Hines' deputy, Patrick Witt, is expected to assume the role. Witt, a former senior Pentagon technology official, has prior experience overseeing research arms like DARPA and held positions within the Trump administration's first term.
Hines' departure occurs as the administration faces scrutiny regarding the US government's Bitcoin holdings, designated as the foundation for its Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. Previously, Hines declined to provide an estimate for these holdings, stating, "there are several reasons we’re not disclosing that at this time." This follows reports suggesting the US government's Bitcoin reserves might be significantly lower than previously rumored, with the classification of seized versus forfeited assets being a key factor in determining government property. There is currently no indication that Hines' exit is directly related to these reporting discrepancies.
In recent market activity, Bitcoin has seen a 1.3% gain, trading at $118,170, while Ethereum is up 1.5% to $4,230.
